What Size Vase Do You Need? An 8, 11 and 14 Inch Guide
Choose a vase by where it will sit and what will go in it. An 8 inch vase suits a side table, desk or a few short stems. An 11 inch vase is the all-rounder for consoles and dining tables. A 14 inch vase holds long stems and stands out on a large console or the floor beside a low cabinet. A common rule of thumb is that flowers should rise roughly one and a half to two times the height of the vase.
Vase sizes at a glance
| Height | Best places | Best stems |
|---|---|---|
| 8 in (20 cm) | Bedside, desk, bathroom, coffee table | Roses, carnations, a few short stems |
| 11 in (28 cm) | Console, dining table, TV unit, shelves | Mixed bunches, tulips, medium stems |
| 14 in (36 cm) | Large console, entrance table, sideboard | Gladioli, lilies, tuberoses, branches |
| 2 to 3 ft (61 to 91 cm) | Floor corners, beside a sofa, entrances | Pampas, dried branches, tall grasses |
8 inch vases
Small enough not to block a view across a table, and right for a bedside table, a work desk or a bathroom counter. A handful of roses or a single stem looks generous in it. Our 8 in vases are Rs 1,799 (Oro Cylinder) and Rs 1,790 (Noir Slant).
11 inch vases
The most useful size if you only buy one. It fits a console, a dining table centre or a TV unit, and holds a normal bunch of flowers from the market. On a dining table, keep the arrangement low enough that guests can see each other across it.
14 inch vases
For long stems such as gladioli, lilies and tuberoses, and for large consoles and sideboards where a smaller vase would look lost. A 14 in vase also stands on its own as a sculptural piece, especially the mirror-black Noir Slant Vase.
Why a trio of 8, 11 and 14 inches works
Grouping three heights is a classic styling trick: the stepped line looks deliberate, even with only one stem in each vase. Keep the trio together on a console, or split it, with the tall one on the console and the two smaller ones on side tables. The Oro Cylinder Vase Trio (Rs 4,599) and Noir Slant Vase Trio (Rs 4,990) both come in these three heights, each 5 in (13 cm) wide.
Don't forget the opening
All our table vases are 5 in (13 cm) wide, with a 5 in opening at every height. That holds a medium bunch upright without the stems flopping outwards. For a big bunch, it's the opening that limits how much you can fit, not the height.
When you need a floor vase instead
If the vase is going on the floor, look at 2 to 3 ft. Our floor vase styling guide explains which height suits which spot.
