Stainless Steel vs Glass vs Ceramic Vases: Which Suits a Home with Kids and Pets?
For a home with young children or pets, a stainless steel vase is the safest everyday choice of the three: it won't shatter if it's knocked over, so there are no sharp pieces to clean up. Glass is best when you want to see the stems and water. Ceramic offers the widest range of colours and handmade textures, but like glass it can crack or break when it falls.
Here is how the three compare on the things that matter at home.
Quick comparison
| Stainless steel | Glass | Ceramic | |
|---|---|---|---|
| If knocked over | Won't shatter | Can shatter into sharp pieces | Can chip, crack or break |
| Looks | Polished, reflective, modern | Clear, light, shows stems | Widest range of colours and glazes |

| Cleaning | Wipe with soft cloth and mild soap | Shows water marks and residue | Depends on the glaze |

Stainless steel vases

Pros: won't shatter if it falls, so it suits homes with crawling babies, curious cats or energetic guests. The mirror-shiny finish reflects light and colour from the room. Cleaning is a quick wipe.
Cons: you can't see the water level, so check it when you change the flowers. Fingerprints show on a polished surface, but they wipe off with a soft cloth.
Our vases are made in our own workshop from 201-grade stainless steel, in mirror-polished gold (Oro Cylinder Vase, from Rs 1,799) and mirror black with a slanted rim (Noir Slant Vase, from Rs 1,790). Both come in heights of 8 in (20 cm), 11 in (28 cm) and 14 in (36 cm), 5 in (13 cm) wide.
Glass vases
Pros: clear glass shows off stems and water, and suits light, airy rooms.
Cons: it can shatter when knocked over, which is the main concern with small children and pets. Cloudy water and mineral marks are visible, so it needs more frequent cleaning.
Ceramic vases
Pros: the widest choice of colours, glazes and handmade shapes.
Cons: it can chip or break if it falls. Unglazed ceramic can absorb water, so for fresh flowers check that the inside is glazed or use a liner.
Which should you choose?
- Toddlers, pets, or lots of guests: stainless steel. A fall means picking it up, not sweeping up pieces.
- You want to see the stems: glass, placed somewhere high and stable.
- You want a particular colour or handmade texture: ceramic, as a decorative piece away from busy areas.

Many homes mix all three. Steel works well for the vases that live in busy spots, like the dining table, the console by the door or the floor corner.
Caring for a stainless steel vase
Change flower water every two days and dry the inside when you empty it. Clean with a soft cloth and mild soapy water, then wipe dry. Avoid bleach, chloride cleaners, scouring powders and steel wool, as the stainless steel industry's home cleaning guide advises.
