How to Style a Console Table: Vases, Planters and the Rule of Three
A well-styled console table has three things: different heights, a few objects grouped in odd numbers, and enough empty space to let each piece be seen. Start with one tall anchor, add a mid-height group of three, finish with something green and something personal, and stop before the surface feels full.
Here is how to do it step by step, whether your console sits in an entrance, behind a sofa or under a TV.
Step 1: Start with one anchor
The anchor is the tallest piece, and everything else is arranged around it. On a console, that is usually a tall vase, a lamp, or a mirror or artwork on the wall above. Put it at one end, not in the middle; an off-centre anchor looks more relaxed than a symmetrical row.

A 14 in (36 cm) vase works as an anchor on most consoles. The Oro Cylinder Vase and the Noir Slant Vase both come in 8, 11 and 14 in heights, each 5 in (13 cm) wide.
Step 2: Use the rule of three
Objects in groups of three look more natural than pairs, because the eye moves between them instead of comparing two. The easiest group is three vases in stepped heights, set in a loose triangle with the tallest at the back.

The Oro Cylinder Vase Trio (Rs 4,599) and Noir Slant Vase Trio (Rs 4,990) give you that group in one go. Keep the three pieces touching or nearly touching, so they read as one shape.
Step 3: Add something green
A plant softens hard surfaces like stone, glass and steel. On a console, a small tabletop planter at the opposite end from your anchor balances the arrangement. If the spot gets little light, use a faux plant; it needs no watering and stays green.

Our Oro and Noir tabletop planters come in Small, 4 in (10 cm) wide and tall, and Medium, 5 in (13 cm) wide and tall. Planters are sold without plants; our faux plants fit straight inside.
Step 4: Add one personal piece
A stack of two or three books, a candle, a small tray for keys, or a framed photo makes the console feel like yours rather than a showroom. Lay books flat and use them to lift a small object.
Step 5: Leave space, then edit
Step back and take one thing away. A console looks best when about a third of its surface is clear. If it is in an entrance, keep a clear spot for keys and post.
Console ideas by room
| Where | Anchor | Group of three | Finish with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entrance | Mirror or 14 in vase | Vase trio with stems | Key tray, small planter |
| Behind a sofa | Table lamp | Books and a small vase | Faux plant |
| Under the TV | Keep it low | Vase trio at one end only | Planter duo at the other end |
| Drawing room | Artwork above | Gold vase trio with fresh flowers | Candle |

Mistakes to avoid
- Everything the same height. A row of similar pieces looks flat. Vary heights by at least a few inches.
- Too many small objects. Five tiny pieces look like clutter; one trio and one planter look styled.
- Blocking the TV or a mirror. Keep tall pieces at the ends.
- Pushing everything to the back edge. Bring the group slightly forward so it has depth.
Frequently asked questions
What is the rule of three in decorating?
Grouping objects in threes, usually in three different heights, because odd-numbered groups look more natural than pairs.
How tall should a vase on a console be?
For the anchor, about 14 in (36 cm) on most consoles. Smaller 8 and 11 in vases work in the group around it.
Can I mix gold and black on one console?
Yes. Pick one as the main finish and repeat the other once or twice, for example two black vases and one gold. Read our guide to choosing a metal finish.
